In CPV marketing, simplifying your landing page, purchasing process, or lead capture forms can have a huge impact on your conversion rate, and overall profits.

We review thousands of CPV landing pages here at DirectCPV. The landing pages that do the best on our network are almost always simple. In general, the more messages a landing page tries to convey, the lower the conversion rate will be.

That doesn’t mean long sales pages don’t work – they do. But while your long copy sales page may sell well with PPC, the same page may not work as a CPV landing page.

Here are some tips to increase the number of leads and sales your CPV landing pages generate:

White Space

By surrounding your headline, call to action, images, and sales bullets with a healthy amount of white space, the visitor has an easier time processing what is being offered to them quickly.

This increases the odds that they will actually read your advertisement instead of just closing the window or skipping the ad.

Simplify Your Message

I’ve helped many business owners create advertisements for their business, and I’ve noticed almost all of them suffer from the same tendency.

We’ll be reviewing the final product, and they’ll say “Oh, I need you to throw in this benefit, oh and this one too”. They see empty space left over, and they naturally want to fill it up with every point they can think of.

When asked to list all of the benefits of their product, most people can easily list several dozen benefits. When creating a CPV advertisement, it’s important to zero in on your top benefit and hammer that benefit home in a unique way people will respond to.

When you try to use every sales point available to you, the reader gets overwhelmed with information. When they see a cluttered page in front of them that they didn’t request, they are more likely to close it.

A simple landing page is easier to understand, and more likely to generate a lead or a click to a second page.

Get Permission Before Pitching

If a person walked up to you on the street, stood in your way, and started listing all of the benefits of their product, would you stop and listen to them? Most of us would dodge around them, and keep walking on our way.

Marketing is a two step process:

1)	Get the users permission to being your sales pitch
2)	Deliver your sales pitch

A good CPV landing page persuades the reader to listen to the pitch. Usually this is accomplished with a persuasive headline, a couple bullets, an eye catching image, and a large bright button the user can click on to get more information (or a lead capture form asking for their e-mail address).

The more comprehensive sales pitch can be handled on the next page, or via an e-mail once you obtain their e-mail address. The job of a CPV landing page is to obtain the readers permission to start your pitch. If your CPV landing page does this well, you’ll generate a lot of leads, close a lot of sales, and make a lot of money.

In this article, we want to show you an advanced CPV marketing strategy that will help you find URL targets based on demographic factors such as gender, income, age, education, ethnicity, and more.

If you are promoting a product that appeals to women, you can easily find websites to bid on that have an audience made up primarily of women. You can also find websites that appeal to Hispanic women, women with kids, women with post-secondary education, and more.

Quantcast is one of the largest online demographic profiling services. Quantcast offers an Advanced Search option which helps you find websites whose audience matches a certain demographic profile.

To Access the Quantcast Advanced Search Option:

1)	Create a Free Quantcast Account
2)	Click “Advanced Search” at the top under the Search Bar
3)	Enter Your Desired Demographics
4)	Sort By Composition % to Order the Results By Relevance

Reverse Engineering Your CPV Campaigns

Besides finding new targets, Quantcast is a great way to find out what type of audience is visiting your successful URL targets. You can then use the Advanced Search options to locate websites that have similar demographic profiles.

Quantcast also offers an Affinity score. This shows you the websites that visitors to a particular website are likely to visit. For example, an affinity score of 55.0x says that people who visit Website X are 55 times more likely to visit Website Y than a random Internet user.

Filtering By Category

The Filter By Category option is a great way to find URL targets based on a specific category.

In the Filters menu, you can enter a category, such as Events/Tickets. This displays a list of websites that people who are looking for tickets are likely to visit.

Last week we published Affiliate Marketing Strategies: How to Use CPV Traffic to Promote Affiliate Programs. In that article, we laid out the exact process professional CPV advertisers use to build profitable CPV advertising campaigns for affiliate programs.

Today, we’d like to share another strategy that can help you create dozens (or even hundreds) of profitable CPV marketing campaigns in almost no time at all. This strategy is one of the easiest strategies you can follow to make money online.

STEP #1: Download the Alexa Top 1,000,000 Domains List

Go to http://www.alexa.com/topsites and click on the link in the top right hand corner that says “Free Download” Top 1,000,000 Sites (Updated Daily).

STEP #2: Find a Domain to Advertise On

You now have a list of the top million websites on the Internet. For now, skip the top 1,000 or so websites. The top 1,000 websites are too general to be useful, and many will have other bidders.

Scan through the list of websites from 1,000 to 10,000 to find a website you want to advertise on.

Here’s what to look for:

1)	Targeted Audience

Think about Facebook.com. That’s an extremely untargeted audience. Everybody goes there. You want to find a website where the majority of the people who visit are interested in the same thing.

2)	Commercial Value

Does the audience have money? Does the fact that they are visiting this website indicate that they are probably ready to spend money?

Take NBC as an example. Many people who visit the NBC website don’t have any discretionary income available to spend. In fact, that may be exactly why they are sitting at home watching TV online. You want to find a website whose audience has money to spend.

3)	Your Background & Experience

Don’t pick a domain that has an audience who is alien to you. You should look for a domain that has an audience you understand.

If you understand who is visiting the domain, what problems they have, what products they need, and how to connect with them, you will find it easy to design a profitable affiliate advertising campaign.

STEP #3: Study the Advertisements on that Domain

When dealing with top 10,000 websites, you can bet on one thing – they know what sells on their own domain. If the website has banner advertisements, pop-ups, text-links, paid reviews, or any other type of paid advertisements, they probably work. Simply write down a list of products being advertised on the domain.

If there are no advertisements on the website, make your own list of products that audience will be interested in. If the website sells something specific (i.e. fishing rods), simply write down fishing rods. If they are a popular technology blog, take a look at their last few posts, and write down the products they are reviewing.

STEP #4: Use OfferVault to Find an Affiliate Program to Promote

Now that you have a list of products to promote, simply plug those products into Offer Vault and see what affiliate offers there are out there.

Next, check whether that offer allows direct linking. If they don’t, design a simple landing page with a large headline and a prominent call to action button to drive traffic to the affiliate program’s landing page. That way, you are only sending hot prospects to the affiliate’s landing page.

STEP #5: Start a URL Campaign

Simply enter the domain you picked as your URL target and launch your campaign.

STEP #6: Analyze Your Results

If the campaign doesn’t make money, switch the offer. When dealing with one domain, you can be sure that the offer is the problem when the campaign doesn’t make money. There is an offer that will make money for almost every domain on the Internet. The trick is to find that offer.

If the campaign does make money, and you want to scale it, find a few more similar domains using the related domain resources we covered in our article 7 Free CPV Marketing Tools.

You are only using the single-domain strategy to find winning offers. You’ll want to scale it up by finding domains that are visited by the same audience as soon as you discover the offer is profitable among that audience.

STEP #7: Repeat

Now simply repeat these steps over and over again to increase your CPV marketing profits. Each time you find a new profitable advertising campaign, your daily profits will go up.

DirectCPV is a great way to promote affiliate programs. Today, we’re going to reveal an easy and repeatable technique that can help you build dozens of profitable affiliate marketing CPV campaigns.

We’ve covered some of these techniques in earlier newsletters, but our goal today is to lay down the exact process professional CPV marketers use to make money marketing affiliate programs with CPV advertising.

1. Find a Niche
Continue reading

DirectCPV is a great way to promote affiliate programs. Today, we’re going to reveal an easy and repeatable technique that can help you build dozens of profitable affiliate marketing CPV campaigns.

We’ve covered some of these techniques in earlier newsletters, but our goal today is to lay down the exact process professional CPV marketers use to make money marketing affiliate programs with CPV advertising.

1. Find a Niche Market

Step one is simply an idea brainstorming session. The goal here is to build a big list of things people spend money on.
Here are some resources to help you find products, skills, and other things people are spending money on.

Products – Amazon Bestsellers

On the Amazon Bestsellers website, you can see what products are popular among a huge range of categories and subcategories.

Remember, for every product you find here, there are dozens of large niche markets around that product. For iphones there are iphone apps, iphone repair, and jailbreak an iphone to name just a few.

Skills – For Dummies Books

If there is a For Dummies book, there is a market. They have organized their store into categories and subcategories. This makes the website a great brainstorming tool for finding niche markets based around skills people are willing to spend money to acquire.

Other – Google Keyword Suggestion Tool

To ensure you only find markets people are spending money on, click the “Columns” button on the right hand side of the screen, and enable “Estimated Avg. CPC”. Next, click “Sort by Relevance” and choose Estimated Avg. CPC to bring the highest profit niche markets to the top.

Use the Categories menu on the left to browse through the categories and subcategories listed here. This menu contains a fairly comprehensive list of potential niche markets.

Write down the niche markets you find that have over 100,000 searches a month (the more the better) that have a high Estimated Avg. CPC.

TIP: Using the advanced search menu, you can use the filters to only see terms that have 100,000 searches per month.

2. Find Affiliate Products to Sell

In step two you want to find affiliate products that people who are interested in the niche will buy. There are two ways to do this:

A)	Offer Vault – Offer Vault is an affiliate product search engine. Offer Vault is a great tool for researching affiliate programs because of the amount of information it displays, and the fact that you can actually preview the landing page without signing up for the offer.

Offer Vault has over 40,000 affiliate programs registered. Just enter your niche into Offer Vault, and you’ll have a list of offers you can promote.

B)	CPABull – Yesterday we told you about CPABull. This tool does one thing – it registers you on 150 affiliate networks of your choice in one easy shot. If you use this tool, you won’t have to apply individually to a new network every time you find an offer you want more information about. Simply register through CPABull, and you’ll have access to affiliate offers on over 150 different networks.

C)	Strike a Deal Privately – The third way to find products to promote is by contacting businesses in your area, or online, and arrange a pay per lead deal, where you receive a commission on every lead or sale you generate.

You can find these arrangements by looking at sales job postings online or in your local paper. All of these companies want leads, and most will be open to leads generated through the Internet.

This third option is attractive because many will pay you very high commissions. Companies who do not have active affiliate programs generally pay much more per lead than companies who have established online affiliate programs.

3. Create a URL and a Keyword Campaign

Some people ask which is better, a Keyword Campaign or a URL Campaign. The answer is both campaign types can produce winning targets. If you do only one or the other, you will miss out on potential domains and keywords that would have produced a profit for you.

When you start with a new niche, test both a URL and a Keyword campaign to take advantage of both types of targets. You may focus more on one or the other, but in almost every case the other campaign type can generate at least a few profitable winners.

4. Test, Tweak, Scale and Repeat

When you market affiliate programs on DirectCPV, some will be profitable and some won’t.

That’s why you want to build a big list of niche markets. Some of your choices might already be competitive. Some of the offers you found might not pay you enough based on your conversion rate.

Don’t be afraid to ditch a niche if it’s not producing the results. You can easily find more. The trick is to test multiple niche markets until you find some that really generate a profit.

Also, remember that a break-even campaign, or even a campaign that generates a small loss, does not mean you should always ditch the campaign. A break-even campaign on the first run implies that with some adjustment, you can turn a profit. The same goes for campaigns that lose a little bit of money. If you focus your targets on what worked, and get rid of the losing targets, you’ll probably make some money.

Lastly, once you find your winning campaigns, scale them up by adding large lists of keywords and URL targets, or slowly raising your maximum bids. Once you find an offer that converts, you want to really scale it up and maximize your traffic.

If you follow this system, you should have no problem finding niche markets that produce a profit. Over time, you’ll find more and more profitable niche markets, and your CPV marketing profits will increase steadily.

Last week, the Federal Trade Commission filed charges against a number of online marketers who use a “fake news” advertising format. These advertisements attempt to convince readers they are reading a legitimate and objective news website, rather than a paid advertisement.

Here is a link with more information on who the FTC is targeting: http://ftc.gov/opa/2011/04/fakenews.shtm

DirectCPV has changed our advertiser guidelines to reflect these new developments. Effective immediately, CPV advertisements that attempt to emulate the look and feel of independent news organizations are not permitted on DirectCPV.

So far the FTC has mainly targeted Acai berry and weight loss websites. However, these new landing page policies apply to all niche markets.

If you are currently running any campaigns that uses a “fake news” advertorial format, please pause those campaigns immediately.

Today, we want to help you create a profitable list of keywords. These tips can help you maximize your traffic, while finding targeted keywords that are often overlooked by other advertisers. Many of the techniques below will help you find uncompetitive keywords that are still at the minimum bid of 1.5 cents.

Types of Keyword Targets to Bid On:

1.	Misspellings

Misspellings are a low-cost way to increase your traffic because they usually have fewer bidders than the main keyword. You can either guess at probable misspellings, or use the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool to find common misspellings.

(Example: “ipadd, I pad, i-pad”)

2.	Buying Phrases

Buying keywords signify that the user has their credit card handy, or at the very least they have money to spend. With these types of keywords, you can be reasonably certain the user has money and is willing to spend it. With the term ipad, the user might just want to learn about ipads, even though they are broke. When they search for where to buy an ipad, they almost certainly have money to spend.

(Example: “Where to buy an ipad, ipad where to buy, buy an ipad, buy ipad, purchase ipad)

3.	Plural

Be sure to add an s to all of your keywords. DirectCPV uses an exact match system to maximize your targeting. Adding an ‘s’ to all of your keywords is an easy way to increase your traffic.

(Example: Ipads, buy ipads, where to buy ipads)

4.	Category Keywords

Your target audience doesn’t always know exactly what they want. Sometimes they start with a broad search for the category. For example, somebody searching for an Ipad might start with “tablets”.

5.	Brands / Competitors

Instead of bidding on product keywords, you may also want to include brand names, as many people may type the name of the company who produces the product they are looking for instead of the actual product name.

6.	Abbreviations, Synonyms, Acronyms and Industry Specific Terminology

Abbreviations, synonyms, acronyms and industry jargon can help you increase your traffic. In addition, many advertisers overlook these terms, so they will often be inexpensive sources of highly targeted traffic.

7.	Long-tail Phrases

Use the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool to generate long-tail keyword phrases. Come up with as many variations as you can to maximize your traffic. Retype each sentence multiple ways to maximize your exposure.

8.	Geo-targeted Keywords

Create a list of every major city in the country or countries you are bidding on and bid on keyword combinations that include that city. SpeedPPC is a premium pay per click advertising tool which allows you to generate massive geographic keyword lists quickly and easily.

(Example: ipad New York, New York ipad, ipad NY, ipad in NY, buy ipad in New York)

9.	Similar Markets

If you are advertising hotel accommodations, you may want to advertise on travel search terms. If you promote ipads, try advertising on laptop related searches.

Be careful when bidding on similar markets, because they might not produce a high enough conversion rate. However, in many cases, similar markets are great way to increase your traffic once you have exhausted all of the highly targeted search terms.

1)	Don’t Send Paid Traffic to Your Homepage

Many advertisers send Pay Per View (PPV) traffic directly to their homepage. Most homepages contain too many navigation options. Also, most homepages do not fit properly into a 800 x 600 window, causing scrollbars to appear, and content to be cut-off.

Build a landing page for your PPV traffic which focuses on achieving your Most Desired Action – the action the user can take which results in a lead or sale.

2)	Build Specialized Landing Pages

Not only is it a good idea to build a specialized landing page, most advertisers build different landing pages for different keyword or URL groups they are bidding on.

If the search term you bid on contains “cheap”, “low cost”, or “inexpensive”, send the user to a landing page that focuses on how much the user will save.

If the search term contains “best”, “custom” or “premium”, send the user to a landing page that focuses on how much better your product is over competitors.

3)	Focus on Commercial Search Terms / URLs

You can raise your conversion rate by focusing on searches and websites with a high commercial value.

The Google Keyword Suggestion Tool can help you determine which keywords have the highest commercial value. Once you run a search, click the “Columns” button which appears on the right hand side of the screen. Put a checkmark next to “Estimated Avg. CPC”. Next, sort the keyword list by “Estimated Avg. CPC” to bring the search terms with the highest Estimated Avg. CPC to the top.

Commercial value also applies to URL targets. A person visiting a website that sells widgets is much more likely to be a buyer than a person who visits a hobby blog about widgets.

4)	Use a Lead Capture Form

A lead capture form asks for the user’s information. Lead captures can ask the user for a variety of information, or they can be as small as simply an e-mail address submission box.

In general, the shorter the lead capture form, the more leads you will get. Every field you add reduces your response rate, so make sure each field you include is important.

5)	Promise the User a Benefit for Submitting their Information

The best lead generation pages promise the user a benefit for submitting their contact information.

Promising the user something for free such as an exclusive report or free ebook can help increase your conversion rate.

Convincing the user you can help them achieve a goal or solve a problem they are having is another popular approach.

6)	Make It Simple

With PPV advertising your ad appears as a pop-up or a full-page interstitial. To be effective, an advertisement must convey the benefit being offered within 2-5 seconds, or the user may close the window.

With PPV advertising, you want to keep your offer simple and easy to understand. Pick your strongest benefit and find a way to quickly convey that benefit to the viewer in under two to five seconds.

The DirectCPV Domain Research Tool gives you a list of domains that have active traffic on DirectCPV that contain a specific keyword in the URL.

To access the Domain Research Tool, log into your DirectCPV Account, click on the Resources drop-down menu, and select “Domain Research”.

2.	iSpionage

iSpionage is a great CPV research tool. Simply type in any domain, and iSpionage will give you a list of top competitors in Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

iSpionage will also tell you the top keywords that website competes for – making it an excellent tool for converting URL campaigns to keyword campaigns. It offers three keyword categories – SEO Keywords, PPC Keywords, and Site Keywords.

The basic version is 100% free with no sign-up required. Paid members receive more keyword and URL suggestions.

3.	Alexa

a.	Related Sites

Search for a URL on Alexa.com, and Alexa will provide you with a list of “High Impact Search Queries” for that domain. If you click the related links link, Alexa will provide several sites that users of the domain are also interested in.

You can also search Alexa for keywords, and it will return a list of relevant sites. What’s really cool about this search feature is that adding additional keywords targets your results further. If the results look too vague with one keyword, simply add a few more keywords, and the results will get more targeted.

b.	Alexa Top 1,000,000

Alexa’s top 1,000,000 domain list is a great way to find high traffic domain names to advertise on. Alexa updates their top 1,000,000 domains daily. Simply click the Free Download button in the top right hand corner, and you’ll get a CSV file containing the top 1,000,000 websites.

Search that document for a keyword, or scan it for websites that look relevant, and you’ll get a big list of high traffic domains to advertise on.

4.	Google Related Sites

You can also search Google for sites related to a specific domain. Simply go to Google, and search for “related:www.insertanysitehere.com”

Google will return 180-200 related domains sorted by overall relevance.

5.	Google Ad Planner

The Google Ad Planner provides “Sites also Visited”. This works great if you have a URL that is performing well and you want to find other websites that appeal to the same demographic.

6.	Google Trends / Google Insights for Search

Google Trends for Websites allows you to search by Website instead of by keyword.

This provides you with a list of related domains, which is different from that provided by Google Ad Planner.

Google Insights for Search also has a really neat feature. Once you search for a term, scroll down to the bottom right corner, and look at the rising searches area. This gives you variations of your keyword that are gaining in popularity right now. Many of these will be uncompetitive since their popularity is often very new.

7.	Quantcast

Quantcast offers an “Audience Also Likes” feature, which can be found in the right hand sidebar after you search for a website.

How to Use These Resources

1)	Find a Domain that is performing well in your campaign.

2)	Search for Related Sites on Google Search, Quantcast, Google Trends, and Alexa to build a URL list.

3)	Enter those domains into iSpionage and Google Insights for Search to build a keyword list.

4)	Check your campaign in a day or two, and remove URLs that generate lots of impressions but no conversions.

5)	Find the URLs that generate the most conversions, and repeat steps 1-4.
